Data monitoring, high quality data to provide quality information

Monitoring activities involve collecting raw data in order to provide reliable, high-quality services to manage road networks as well as to inform end users through reliable Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).

SERTI contributes actively to the deployment of modern telecommunication systems (fibre optics) and incident detection systems using various types of technology: such as video, counting stations and radars. SERTI is also stressing mobile data collection which involves gathering data from mobile devices. An important improvement for monitoring in the coming years will also come from satellite applications.

Data exchange and Traffic Management equipment

In order to provide real-time traffic information to drivers and to road operators, it is necessary to process and to exchange collected data both automatically and manually.

Traffic Control Centres and Traffic Information Centres have been implemented and improved within SERTI. The major improvements concern the information exchange between the national and European TCC and the integration of several sources of data (meteo, mobile phones, etc.).

Traffic information at local, national and international level

To exchange traffic information between different partners and different countries a data exchange protocol was defined at European level. This standard called Datex enables different TCCs and TICs to exchange traffic information by using the same definition of events (ALERT C Standard) and the same communication protocol. Within SERTI, one of the most operational network of traffic centres in Europe has been set up by using Datex. In 2004, France, Spain and Italy are able to exchange traffic information in real time at local, national and international level.
